News from MiPASS — because our kids deserve better, safer, and healthier schools.

Dear Governor Whitmer,
I write to you not only as the President of the Michigan State Board of Education, but as someone who cares deeply about the well-being of every child in this state.
As I know you do as well, I bring a clear and urgent message: we are facing a wave of cruelty and disregard sweeping across this country that cannot be ignored. Cruelty aimed at children, families, educators, and the foundational values of truth, inclusion, and justice that our public education system must uphold.
We are witnessing coordinated efforts to erase diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) from our schools, replacing them with politically motivated falsehoods that threaten the very fabric of our democracy. These attacks are not just wrong—they are dangerous.

Trump Administration Threatens School Funding Over Broad, Unclear Anti-DEI Order
|
The Trump administration has issued a sweeping, vague anti-DEI directive that puts federal education funding—including Title I dollars for low-income students—at risk. Schools now have fewer than 10 days to comply or face losing critical resources.
The order labels support programs as “discriminatory” without clearly defining what that means. The result? A chilling effect on the very programs that help students thrive.
What’s at risk?
-
✅ Clubs that foster belonging: Best Buddies, GSA’s, multicultural and newcomer groups
-
✅ Inclusive teaching practices: Professional development on disability inclusion and differentiated learning
-
✅ Programs rooted in civil rights protections: Supports for English learners, students with disabilities, and equity initiatives
This isn’t about fairness—it’s about control. Billions in federal aid are being weaponized to silence schools and dismantle inclusion.
🛑 Here’s how you can take action:
-
Urge your school board to stand up for inclusive education.
-
Share your story—how have inclusion programs impacted you or your child?
-
Call your elected officials and tell them: We won’t back down.

Oakland County reports first case of mumps, Macomb County reports first measles case
|
The first case of mumps in Oakland County since 2022 has been reported by the Oakland County health department, and Macomb County’s health department confirmed its first case of measles this year, bringing the state’s total measles cases to three.
The Oakland County health department does not believe there were any close contacts or exposures to the adult resident diagnosed with mumps, which is a contagious viral infection that affects the salivary glands and spreads through saliva or respiratory droplets from the mouth, nose or throat. The Oakland County case is the ninth person in Michigan to be diagnosed with mumps this year.

RFK Jr. publicly urges people to get the measles vaccine
|
US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. publicly urged people to get the measles vaccine in an interview with CBS News on Tuesday.
“We encourage people to get the measles vaccine,” Kennedy told the network’s chief medical correspondent, Dr. Jon LaPook.
“The federal government’s position, my position, is that people should get the measles vaccine, but the government should not be mandating those,” Kennedy said. “I always said during my campaign — and every part, every public statement I’ve made — I’m not gonna take people’s vaccines away from them. What I’m gonna do is make sure that we have good science so that people can make an informed choice.”
